Hello, I am currently working on a project regarding the 553 US Service Personnel who were buried in the Cemetery along my road in Winchester England in 1918. (Magdalen Hill Cemetery). According to the burial registers Arthur John Sederberg died in the Southampton Military Hospital aged 27 years and was buried on 9 October 1918. In 1920 The Home Office began exhumation of all the US Personnel and worked with the families to either repatriate them to the US or move them to an American Military Cemetery in the UK. His remains were exhumed on 27 April 1920. It is evident that he was repatriated to the US at his families request.

During my research, I have discovered that most of the US Service Personnel buried at Magdalen Hill had contracted influenza in the Training Camps in the US or on the Transport Ships bringing them to the Military camps in the South Of England. Unfortunately, influenza often progressed to pneumonia which ultimately caused their deaths.

His death certificate can be obtained from the General Register Office in England using the reference: Volume No-2C Page-117. I hope this information will be of some assistance to you and others. Best regards, Lorraine Boardman.
